The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) [UML] and the Nepali Congress have reached a 7-point agreement for power-sharing and governance. The agreement was announced today by Prime Minister and UML President KP Sharma Oli during a meeting of the House of Representatives.

Key points of the agreement include:

  1. Formation of a national consensus government under Article 76 (2) of the Constitution, focusing on protecting national interests, maintaining good governance, controlling corruption, and accelerating development.

  2. Review and potential amendment of the Constitution to address emerging complexities and ensure political stability.

  3. Efforts to revitalize the economy by creating a reliable business environment, encouraging investment, and generating employment opportunities within Nepal.

  4. A power-sharing arrangement where UML President KP Sharma Oli will lead the government for two years, followed by Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba until the general election in 2084.

  5. Development of a minimum common program as the basis for running the national consensus government.

  6. Equal participation of UML and Congress in the government, with inclusion of other political parties.

  7. Alignment of provincial governments with the national consensus approach and acceleration of development work at provincial and local levels.

This agreement marks a significant shift in Nepal's political landscape, aiming to provide stability and foster development in the coming years. The unusual length of the power-sharing arrangement, extending to 2084, is particularly noteworthy and may require further clarification.

The implementation of this agreement and its impact on Nepal's governance and development will be closely watched by political observers and citizens alike in the coming months and years.
